Rock The Bells 2011, Governor’s Island, NYC 9.4.11 (Photos + Recap)

Performers for this year’s Rock The Bells hip-hop music festival invaded Governor’s island this past weekend, aiding to the needs of thousands of hip-hop heads throughout the tri-state area.

The annual concert series hosted by Boost Mobile in association with Guerilla Union, BlackBerry, and Reebok Classics thrilled lovers of hip-hop by allowing for the opportunity to witness acclaimed artists in their own right, all of which graced the stage by performing a sequence of their own classic albums, respectively. For the New York City slot, performances included, Cypress Hill (“Black Sunday”), Mos Def & Talib Kweli (“Black Star), Mobb Deep (The Infamous”), Black Moon (“Enta Da Stage”), Erykah Badu (“Baduizm”), Nas (“Illmatic”), and Ms. Lauryn Hill (“The Miseducation of…”). Attendees were fortunate enough to see the aforementioned perform, in addition to a host of surprise guests – including Pete Rock, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder and others.

The festival was an all-day affair, accommodating thousands of fans anxious to witness a day to remember – as Rock The Bells continued their notable 7-year run at providing one of the biggest hip-hop summer festivals in the tri-state area, to date. There were a few who returned to the stage from last year’s big show (Lauryn Hill, DJ Premier, Rakim, Black Moon) as well first-timers who were blessed with the opportunity to perform alongside such an impressive list – including up-and-comers Childish Gambino and Big K.R.I.T.

Amongst conversation between attendees, the most highly anticipated stage acts were Ms. Lauryn Hill’s segment, and Nas, who closed the show. Contrary to popular belief, those in doubt of whether or not Ms. Hill would come correct for her audience (due to a string of horrendous past performances) would be disappointed to hear how incredible her show actually was. As the speakers blasted the intro to her classic debut solo album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”, fans yelled with bright enthusiasm as Ms. Hill approached the stage and addressed her audience. To say the very least, Ms. Hill shut it down.

The closing act included Nas, who brought out his surprise special guests, ranging from the iconic DJ Premier, to Pete Rock and MC Serch. As expected, Nas surely represented everything that was expected of him, highlighting well-known hits as well as classic tracks especially suited for intense, “Illmatic” fans.

All in all, Guerilla Union does it again with another memorable Rock The Bells show in NYC. The tour comes to an end on September 10th in Boston.
